Border reopening all set for endemic phase

MIRI: The Malaysia-Brunei border will reopen in time as the country enters the endemic phase on April 1.

Deputy State Secretary (Rural Transformation) Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik chaired a meeting on the Reopening of the Miri-Brunei Border at Malaysian Immigration Department, Sungai Tujoh on Tuesday (Mar 22).

The meeting discussed the protocol for travellers in line with the reopening of the country’s borders next week.

Pahon noted that this included pre-release conditions that must be completed by travellers from Brunei Darussalam.

“Traveller from the country have to download the MySejahtera application and undergoing the COVID-19 RTK Antigen Test (RTK-Ag) to be allowed entry.

“Other than that, provide clear signage and directions so that travellers are aware of the process that will be passed at the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex (ICQS) Complex Sungai Tujoh.

“Provide RTK-Ag test services at the entry point along with the interpretation of test results to the private sector,” said Pahon, who is the deputy chairman of the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

In fact, entries and exits by people at IQCS Sungai Tujoh on weekdays are between 3,000 and 4,000 people while on weekends 5,000 to 6,000 people go through the points and on public holidays it’s between 6,000 and 7,000 people daily.

According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) Pahon also visited IQCS Sungai Tujoh to review the needs and readiness of the complex ahead of the border reopening on April 1.

Also present were deputy director of the State Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPN) Datuk Clarence Rorote Sagan, Miri Division Resident Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusuf, Miri Division Health Officer Dr P Raviwharmman Packierisamy and Volunteer Corp (RELA) Miri District officer Mohamad Afizi Salam.

Representatives from the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM), Immigration Department, Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), Public Works Department (JKR) and Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) were also present at the meeting.
