SIBU: A boy from Bintangor, Merlin Martina, 12, has a good chance to obtain a birth certificate before he sits for the UPSR examination this year.
Minister of Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing, Datuk Hajah Fatimah Abdullah said the State National Registration Department (NRD) has instructed its branch in Bintangor to help Merlin’s guardian, his grandfather known only as Henry.
“Merlin’s grandfather has been advised to return to Bintangor to get verification from a community leader as part of the procedure to apply for Merlin’s birth certificate.
“They will be assisted by NRD’s officer in Bintangor,” Fatimah explained when met by reporters after launching a campaign to fight obesity: A corporate social responsibility (CSR) project by Delta Leasing Sdn Bhd held at SMK Sacred Heart here yesterday.
Fatimah explained that the citizenship status of Merlin’s mother, Martina Henry, 27, should be no problem for Merlin to obtain a birth certificate.
“Hence, this issue can be solved quickly because the State NRD will help Merlin to obtain a birth certificate in order for him to sit for the UPSR examination,” she said.
Fatimah disclosed that Martina gave birth to Merlin when she was 15 years old but left Merlin in the care of his grandfather (Henry) in Bintangor.
Now, Martina lives in Serian with her two children who both have birth certificates.
