SIBU: Two-and-half-year-old cancer patient Ethaniel Lee Yi Heng (pic) has received the bone marrow transplant from a Taiwanese donor.

According to the chairman of Sibu Cancer Care Society Dr Clement Chen, the bone marrow arrived in Kuala Lumpur from Taiwan at noon yesterday.

Dr Chen had last month sent out an SOS calling for the public to donate towards the cost of the bone marrow transplant. Ethaniel was diagnosed with acute leukaemia when he was 14 months old. The cost of the procedure was estimated to be RM650,000.

The Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society had earlier donated RM150,000.

Dr Chen said after a series of tests, the transplant was carried out at 4pm yesterday.

On Ethaniel’s current mental and physical health, he said the boy was in good shape.

“Doctors attending to him said he is petrified with the daily injection as he is still a child,” he said.

On a daily basis, two nurses at Subang Jaya Medical Centre are taking turns to care for him round the clock. Only the boy’s father can stay in this isolated intensive care unit.
