KUCHING: The construction of 11 bridges and coastal roads is a big way of opening up the hitherto long-undeveloped interior and coastal parts of Sarawak, opined Datuk Peter Minos.

The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman said this will give rise to and extend economic opportunities.

True, the expenditure is big — RM11 billion for 11 bridges and coastal roads connecting them — but it is worth it because the state badly needs the infrastructure, particularly the coastal people.

“Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has a prominent role in this with his wise moves and decisions. He is very good in raising funds for the state. His attitude is, if Sarawak can afford it, why not do it,” he said.

Minos also said such projects should not be politicised as they are important to Sarawak and its people.

He added that the state needs and deserves the same types of developments like those in Malaya.

“We must not listen to those who always discouragingly say, ‘Spend not, waste not’, but do not provide alternatives and do nothing for Sarawak. These people are playing negative politics.

“As a Sarawakian, I must say that state government is doing it right. If we do not develop the basic public utilities like roads, bridges, electricity and water supplies, when will we ever do it?

“If we look at the well-connected Malaya, we’d notice how much easier it is for the people there to move around, do business and improve their lives. This partly explains why they are moving ahead faster and more vigorously than us,” he said.
