GEORGE TOWN: It’s time to celebrate Aidilfitri and what would brighten up the home in time for the arrival of guests more than flowers with a profuse perfume.

Feeling bored sitting at home with time on her hands, Norlina Muhamad Nur, 37, a homemaker, told Bernama she got the idea to get on YouTube to learn how to make soap flowers so that she could make money.

“Every day for a month I learned and practised until I could make beautiful flowers. Alhamdulillah, now I’m earning money from many people who are ordering,” she said at her house.

The mum-of-one, with an interest in flower arranging, said the uniqueness of a soap flower is that it smells nice, won’t wilt and can last up to six years.

“To make it, first you have to grate the soap and add food colouring according to what you like. Then add flour and some water, and mix.

“To make the dough pliable so that petals can be easily formed, add a bit of glue and knead it into the dough. It is set aside for two days to become softer and easier to shape,” said Norlina, who makes roses and lilies which are sold for between RM5 and RM40.

Apart from selling her flowers to those intending to liven up their living space and taking orders for convocation ceremonies, Norlina said she would like to grow into making floral wedding favours, too. – Bernama
