KUCHING: Heavy vehicles working on the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway are crushing pipelines.

Incidents like these are unavoidable, but the authorities are doing their best to ensure supply will not be disrupted over long periods.

The Department of Rural Water Supply (JBALB) Miri is working closely with Lebuhraya Borneo Utara Sdn Bhd (LBU) to speed up repair works on the broken pipelines along the Pan Borneo Highway which were caused by heavy machineries on Monday.

The damage has caused water supply interruptions to various areas in Miri.

JBALB director Chang Kuet Shian said the main pipe was found broken and it was caused by heavy vehicles working

“JBALB Miri is working hard to speed up the repair works so that the period of water interruption in the areas could be shortened,” he said.

At the same time JBALB Miri and LBU will supply treated water to residents in the affected areas using lorries, adding that the situation could last for a week or more.

He said the repair works in Lambir (after Bukit Song), Bekenu up to the coastal road and Bukit Peninjau- Beluru was expected to be completed in two to three days, while repair works in Bekenu Pelapi/Sulap Lada/Padang Lelulit/Terahad/Pejuang Kelulit/Kuala Sibuti/Rh Renang/Tiris/Tunah will take a week or more.

“Following the interruption of water supply to these areas JBALB wish to advise those affected residents to store enough water and save on water consumption.

“JBALB wish to apologise for the problem,” said Chang.

Meanwhile Chang said repair work on the main pipeline at Bukit Song was completed at 10.20 pm yesterday.
