Pandelela, Jun Hoong makes podium in world meet

BUDAPEST: Diving queens Pandelela Pamg and Jun Hoong Cheong did Malaysia proud again by winning the bronze medal in the women’s 10 metre synchronised platform at World Aquatics Championships in Budapest on Sunday..

The Rio Olympics 2016 silver medallists collected 328.74 points in the women’s 10m platform event.

China maintained their two-decade dominance in the event.

Competing for the first time together Ren Qian and Si Yajie took gold for China which has now won this event at all nine world meets since Ukraine won in 1988.

“We were very nervous at the beginning, so we are very happy with the result, we want to win many more medals for China in the future,” said Ren.

The gold medal went to China’s Ren Qian and Si Yajie who scored 352.56 points while North

Korea’s pair Kim Mi Rae-Kim Kuk Hyang took the silver with 336.48 points.

Behind the Chinese duo on 352.56 points, Kim Mi-Rae and Kim Kuk-Hyang won North Korea’s first ever silver medal at a world meet with 336.48.

The gold was Ren’s second in Budapest after her win on Saturday in the mixed 10 metre synchronised platform event with compatriot Lian Junjie.

Si Yajie’s gold was her third in platform diving, at three different world championships.

Meanwhile, national men’s divers Ooi Tze Liang and Chew Yi Wei finished in tenth place in the final of the men’s 3m springboard synchronised event in the 17th FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary on Sunday.

The national diving pair recorded 370.77 points.

They started off poorly with only 46.80 points and 49.80 points in the first two jumps.

However, they improved their performances with their third (78.54 points), fourth (70.38) and fifth jumps (76.23) respectively.

Ooi/Chew faltered in their last jump managing only 49.02 points.

The gold medal was won by Ilia Zakharov/Evgenii Kuznetsov of Russia with 450.30 points while the silver and bronze went to Xie Siyi/Cao Yuan of China (443.40) and Oleg Kolodiy/ Illya Kvasha (429.99) of Ukraine.
