‘Building, upgrading of various sports facilities to continue’

KUCHING: Under the 11th Malaysia Plan, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports continues to build and upgrade existing sports facilities throughout the state.

For example the upgrading works for Dalat Sports Complex and its running tracks have been completed and that the construction of the new Betong Swimming pool has started and is scheduled to be completed by December 2018.

At the same time, upgrading works for sports complexes in Sri Aman and Bintulu have been initiated earlier this month and to be completed in February 2018, while the ones in Miri and Kapit will commence in the third quarter of this year.

“The upgrading works for running tracks in Sarikei Sports Complex will be carried out under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) and is expected to commence in June and targeted to be completed within nine months.

“Its other facilities such as terraces, office space, toilets and roofing will be upgraded under the 11th Malaysia Plan approved fund later this year.

“Another RTP will be used to upgrade Asajaya and Kanowit sports complexes where Kanowit has been completed this month whereas the latter will be completed by September.”

This was said by the Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah in his winding up speech during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, yesterday.

In another development, three youth camps, namely Pueh Youth Camp (Lundu), Kemuyang Youth Camp (Sibu) and Mukah Youth Camp have all started their upgrading works in March and are expected to complete by November.

“The ministry is also aware that other facilities such as the Civic Centres and Swimming Pools also need an upgrading in view of their deteriorating condition.

“Hence, we will continue to carry out upgrading works for these facilities based on the approved funds,” said Karim.
