SPAOH: Education is a priority and folk in Bukit Saban now have access to a programme aimed at producing more graduates.

The Bukit Saban Community Education Programme is initiated by Dr Abang Ismail Abang Julhi, who is the director of the Rajang Teachers Training College.

“Bukit Saban has produced many professionals in various fields and Dr Abang Ismail, for example, a local from Spaoh is one of them.”

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also Bukit Saban assemblyman, said this when launching the programme here on Thursday (July 21).

Uggah said Spaoh had produced many engineers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, politicians, businessmen and a host of others.

“I hope this tradition continues so that the future generation can carry on contributing to nation-building, particularly its own community’s prosperity and wellbeing.

“We want our students to not only know how to study but how to study effectively towards achieving their goals.”

Uggah, who is also Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, was glad that among the programme’s objectives was to help students master the English language.

He reminded rural parents not to deny their children the chance of higher education because of financial constraints.

“The Sarawak government is the most caring. It’s Sarawak Foundation is offering scholarships and loans. We also have corporate bodies like Petronas, Shell, MARA, PTPTN for the same purpose besides those offered by the private sector.”

Earlier, Abang Ismail said the time had now come for Betong to have a matriculation college.

“We have 14 secondary schools and they can be feeder schools for universities, including Universiti Malaysia Sarawak.

“We are also going to have an airport in nearby Bebuling, which is a condition for such a college. If we can have the college, our dream of producing more graduates and professionals can be achieved.”
