Eighty per cent of the population in Bukit Semuja are enjoying clean water supply while everyone of them have power supply, said John Ilus (GPS-Bukit Semuja) in his speech supporting the motion of appreciation for the Head of State’s opening address at the State Legislative Assembly yesterday.

However, some people were not able to enjoy the facilities because of the addition of families, residents and even the expansion of villages, he said.

John urged the related authorities to take the necessary steps to speed up the application process and connect the power and supply supplies to the “late applicants”.

“Take Kpg Merakai for example. The villagers are still waiting for updates on the water supply project which was tendered earlier this year. When will it be implemented?” he asked.

John revealed that the late applications also came from Kpg Riih Mawang, Kpg Tangga Mawang, Kpg Hulu Serian, Kpg Hilir, Kpg Siantan, Kpg Riih Daso, Kpg Tebakang Bidayuh and Kpg Tebakang Melayu.

He proposed the upgrading of the existing Kuching-Serian Road water pipeline from the existing 355mm to 600mm (from Stabun tank until Batang Samarahan Bridge).

“This pipeline is very critical and needs to be upgraded in order to cater to existing and future demands, especially along Old Baki Road to Jalan Ensengei, Old Kuching Serian Road up to Kpg Panchor and Tian Palah area where frequent dry pipes occur. Many high ground areas suffer with no water or low pressure due to the small size of the existing pipeline,” he explained.

“The safety level and the quality of source of water for the Selabi Water Treatment Plant in Serian needs to be explained to the members of the public to dispel rumours and accusations that the source of water is polluted by agricultural activities along the rivers,” he continued.

John also requested for road lamps in the villages.

He also called for the establishment of Dataran Serian, the placement of speed breakers, “zebra crossings and signboards at specific and strategic locations as well as the survey and granting of land titles.
