KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has proposed for Bukit Siol here to be converted into a nature park.

He said that aside from its history, it was fitting for Bukit Siol to have its own nature park.

“Currently we have Samajaya Nature Reserve, why not make another one for those across (Sarawak River)? So we will convert Bukit Siol to be a nature park.

“In addition to this, I also agree to upgrade Piasau National Park at a cost of RM30 million,” he said during the launch of Sarawak Energy’s Ten Year Integrated Tree Planting, Protection and Habitat Restoration Programme at Samajaya Nature Reserve yesterday (June 13).

Abang Johari also announced plans to upgrade Bukit Lima Nature Reserve in Sibu which will be managed by University of Technology Sarawak together with Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC).

“We have to regenerate our urban renewal at Bukit Assek and this will involve the Palawan area all the way to Bukit Lima.

“That is why we are currently studying the matter. We want to make sure that it can be part and parcel of the whole Sibu region development.

“With the development going as planned, it is hoped that we will be able to achieve our 2030 target,” he said.
