KUCHING: Bumiputera students in Sarawak can now enroll for professional accountancy courses at Kolej Sunway Kuching under the Peneraju Professional Akauntan Muda Kategori A (PPAM-A) (SPM Leavers) programme.

Awarded by Yayasan Peneraju Pendidikan Bumiputera (Yayasan Peneraju), this exclusive scheme is currently offered only in the Klang Valley and Sarawak as it is dependent on the tuition provider’s locality.

The PPAM-A programme aims to increase the number of certified professional accountants via the fastest route to a career in accountancy – the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) professional qualifications.

Yayasan Peneraju’s sponsorship is in a convertible loan basis covering the student’s tuition fees, annual subscription fees, initial registration fees, exam fees and exemption fees, allowances and accommodation.

The main benefit of the PPAM-A programme is that it gives young and motivated scholars the opportunity to obtain internationally recognized qualifications while being funded at a leading education institution like Kolej Sunway Kuching. Apart from CAT and ACCA certification, scholars will also obtain a Degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University (OBU) through Research and Analysis Project (RAP) upon completion of this programme.

To be eligible for the scheme, the candidate must be Bumiputera, aged 19 years or below and must have completed SPM or O-levels with a minimum of 5As (including minimum As in Mathematics and English).

Scholars will need to complete all certification papers (CAT, ACCA and OBU Degree) within 4 years on a full time study basis. Upon completion of the programme, scholars are only required to pay a maximum of 20% of the loan. They will not be bonded by Yayasan Peneraju, but are required to work within Malaysia. If a scholar chooses to work outside of Malaysia, then he or she is required to work with a Malaysian company.

Bumiputera students interested in the PPAM-A programme are urged to apply directly through Yayasan Peneraju’s website (www.yayasanpeneraju.com.my). There is no need to apply through Kolej Sunway Kuching.

CAT is a nine-paper, technician level qualification designed by ACCA to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to accountancy. The course can be completed within 12 to 18 months of full-time study and is recognised by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) as equivalent to a diploma. CAT is generally regarded as a stepping stone to the ACCA professional accountancy qualification.

Upon completing CAT, students receive exemption from the three (3) papers (Knowledge Module) at the Fundamentals Level of ACCA.

ACCA is an internationally recognised professional accountancy qualification from the United Kingdom that is equivalent to a Masters Degree in Accountancy. Armed with this qualification and three years of relevant working experience, graduates will be recognised by the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) and will be able to practice as qualified chartered accountants.

Unlike foreign accounting degree holders, ACCA graduates do not need to sit for professional exams to qualify for MIA recognition as ACCA is one of the few overseas accounting bodies that is fully accredited by the MIA.

Kolej Sunway Kuching is the first and only tuition provider in East Malaysia to be awarded Platinum Approved Learning Partner status by ACCA. This prestigious accolade is bestowed only to those tuition providers that have met stringent performance indicators such as pass rates which surpass those of the world, effective management and relevant support services. Since achieving this award in 2010, Sunway Kuching has successfully sustained it for the past seven years over 14 consecutive examination sittings. The college has to date nurtured 386 ACCA Affiliates, 96 OBU graduates, 819 CAT Finalists, 8 CAT World Prize Winners and 22 ACCA and CAT Malaysian Prize Winners.
