KUCHING: Sarawak Patriots Association (SPA) is not surprised by the result of the Tanjung Piai by-election.
Its chairman Datuk Dr John Lau Pang Heng in a statement yesterday, congratulated Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Seri Wee Jeck Seng for being elected as Tanjung Piai MP with a big majority of 15,086 votes.
“We have learned that voters are getting smart. Voters are not looking for political messengers but what is the message?
“Voters are no longer patient to wait for a New Malaysia as the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government always has reasons to U-turn their promises to the people.”
Lau noted that the Chinese voters rejected Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) in 2018 General election, but this time they voted for MCA.
They are not happy with PH over many issues such as Unified Examination Certification (UEC), Dr Zakir Naik issue, bail out for Felda and Tabung Haji as well as toll rate not reduced or abolished.
“The Chinese voters are frustrated with constant changes of decisions. Hence, Tanjung Piai Chinese showed their unhappiness by casting their votes on a political party that they have rejected before.
“The result was not due to the pact between United Malays National Organisation (Umno) and Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), or the BN is doing better. Chinese votes are split and they do not rally behind a particular political party. While the Malays rallied behind Umno and PAS.
“We believe that PH lost in Tanjung Piai because non-Bumiputera voters would like to teach PH a lesson and thus, the shift from PH to BN,” he said.
He said the result manifested the poor performance of PH government for not delivering the reforms as they promised on May 9, 2018 general election.
“We, the citizens in this country are tired of continuous in-fighting among some federal political leaders for power among themselves. These leaders have forgotten about their promises during the GE14,” he stated.
