California records highest single-day spike in new cases

BEIJING: The following are the updates on the global fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, reported Xinhua news agency:

LOS ANGELES — The number of Covid-19 cases has totalled 173,324 in the US state of California as it recorded its highest single-day spike in coronavirus infections on Sunday.

According to the data from the California Department of Public Health, 4,515 new virus diagnoses were identified statewide in the previous 24 hours, beating the previous record of 4,317 new cases reported Friday.

SANTIAGO — Chile has reported a total of 242,355 Covid-19 cases as of Sunday, with 4,479 deaths, according to the country’s health ministry.

In the past 24 hours ending 9 pm local time Saturday, 5,607 new cases were detected and 184 more patients died, the ministry said.

CAIRO — Egypt confirmed on Sunday 1,475 new Covid-19 infections, bringing the total cases registered in the country since mid-February to 55,233, said Egyptian Health Ministry.

Meanwhile, 87 patients died from the novel coronavirus on the same day, raising the death toll to 2,193, Egyptian Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said in a statement.

ANKARA — Turkey’s confirmed Covid-19 cases Sunday increased by 1,192, and 23 more people died, taking the death toll to 4,950, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Sunday.

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases stood at 187,685 in the country, the minister tweeted.

BAGHDAD — Iraqi Health Ministry on Sunday reported 1,646 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of cases since the outbreak of the disease in the country to 30,868.

The statement also reported 87 deaths during the day, as the total number of deaths climbed to 1,100 in the country, while 13,935 patients have recovered.

BERLIN — The number of persons infected from a Covid-19 outbreak in the meat processing company Toennies in the district of Guetersloh in North-Rhine Westphalia had risen to 1,331 as of Sunday afternoon, according to the press release of the district.

The district of Guetersloh said 6,139 tests had been carried out, and 5,899 results are now available, among which 1,331 are positive. Five employees of the company are now in intensive care.

BEIJING — The daily nucleic acid testing capacity of China’s capital Beijing had surged from 100,000 to more than 230,000 as of Saturday amid efforts to contain the resurgence of domestically transmitted Covid-19 cases.

The number of designated institutions for nucleic acid testing in the city had increased from 98 to 124 over the past week, Gao Xiaojun, a spokesman for the municipal health commission, told a press conference Sunday. – Bernama
