IT is hoped that the Sarawak government can expand the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supply, especially towards more strategic coastal and rural areas in Sarawak.

Lingga assemblywoman Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor said that this is to ensure the additional charge from the supplier on the delivery of the LPG gas is not too expensive.

“For example, with the future completion of the Batang Lupar 1 bridge, which will connect Sebuyau Triso, it would be nice if the state government could develop at least one Petros petrol station that not only will supply the petroleum but further prepare the LPG gas supply in Maludam.

“This proposal is not only to benefit communities in Maludam but also to all the communities from Triso, Maludam, Semarang, Beladin and Sepinang, which are roughly estimated to have more than 20,000 population.”

Dayang Noorazah said this when debating on The Distribution of Gas (Amendment) Ordinance 2023 Bill on the second day of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Tuesday (Nov 21).

On another note, she also agrees with the amendment of the Distribution of Gas Ordinance under section 23 and new section 23A, which fall under Part 5 (V) Offences and Penalties: Power to arrest, search, seizure, and investigation, imposing legal action towards the persons who fail to comply with this ordinance.

“This is because we often hear about cases where unlicensed gas suppliers engage in the storage and smuggling of subsidized LPG Gas, both domestically and to neighbouring countries.

“Their actions can pose dangers to themselves and even to consumers, as there are concerns that the supply of LPG gas may not be safely used.”
