KUCHING: More people from other ethnic groups should be encouraged to join the Sarawak Hawkers and Trader Association, said Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The move could strengthen the organisations, he said, adding that more than 50,000 out of at least 75,000 small hawkers in Sarawak were using Sarawak Pay.

“It can be seen that the hawkers have changed with the times and their spirit is commendable.

“However, there are still more than 5,000 traders who still use bank accounts. There are still more than 8,000 hawkers who went to the city council to receive aid from BKSS,” he said

Dr Sim hoped that the hawkers could master the latest technology to face challenges in the future.

“When the COVID-19 epidemic was raging, people from all walks of life faced hardships.  I’m grateful for the solidarity of Sarawakians, including the Caring Food Aid activities by this association which took care of needy Sarawakians,” he added.

Dr Sim said Sarawak needed economic transformation and that the government was going to set up the Sarawak Sovereign Fund to make the state prosperous.

He thanked the voters who supported the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in the state election, and made the state politically stable.

“GPS will continue to be the best choice to lead Sarawak,” added Dr Sim.
