SINGAPORE: The Sarawak government will be acquiring its cargo plane to enable the export of the state’s agricultural products by the end of this year or the first quarter of next year.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said  the arrangements are being made to get the plane.

“Hopefully if not at the end of this year, then the first quarter of next year,” he said after the soft opening of Statos.

He added that the cargo plane would  enable the export of agricultural products, including vegetables and poultry, to Singapore.

“The flight to Singapore takes about an hour, and we can have it transported to the market immediately without depending on commercial airlines,” he said.

The cargo plane can carry up to three containers, including refrigerated containers.

“This is the area which I have discussed with Singapore Prime Minister,” he said.

Last year, Abang Johari  announced that Sarawak would purchase a three-tonne cargo plane worth RM10 million, to facilitate export of agricultural products.

He added that the state government also planned to build landing strips in Sadok and Tunoh to help with transporting agricultural products in the two areas.
