SIBU: Police successfully tracked down a thief who ran away with a handbag belonging to a woman on Wednesday (Aug 18).

Sibu OCPD ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit on Friday (Aug 20) said the incident happened in Jalan Salim around 10.15am.

The 66-year-old victim parked her vehicle to have breakfast at a nearby coffee shop.

“The victim left her handbag, which contained five credit cards, four ATM bank cards, driving licence and a gold chain worth RM2,500, in the car,” he elaborated.

After breakfast, she returned to her car and found that the door was not locked and her handbag was missing.

The victim then lodged a report at a nearby police station.

ACP Stanley said police used CCTV footage from a shop to track down the suspect.

The suspect, 42, who is jobless, was seen opening the door of the victim’s vehicle before fleeing with the handbag.

“The investigation team identified the suspect because he had a previous criminal record and went straight to his house at Lorong 4, Jalan Salim.

“When questioned, the suspect admitted to running away with the victim’s handbag,” ACP Stanley explained.

The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.
