KUCHING: Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) has been entrusted to become the resource manager for Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) implementation in the state.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this was in view of PETROS’s technical skills and it will be receiving support from relevant ministries.

In saying this, he pointed out that CCUS is a key enabler to achieve Net Zero by 2050 as the world transitions away gradually from carbon-based fossil fuels.

“Our state is blessed with geological structures that are suitable to store carbon dioxide and its potential for CCUS can be at a world-scale.

“The CCUS industry will promote the development of Sarawak’s massive sour gas reserves which contains carbon dioxide to secure long term energy security for the state, to create more domestic jobs through green industry and to provide another revenue source to the state,” he said.

He said this during PETROS’ five years anniversary celebration dinner at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last night.

Abang Johari also said he was pleased that Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) has signed a Collaboration Agreement with PETROS for CCUS Joint Collaboration Agreement.

“This is the step to enable the green economy, so thank you PETRONAS.

“As part of the energy transition, we are also positioning Sarawak to become a hydrogen producing hub in the region and this will complement the later phase of this plan,” he said.

Abang Johari added that he was proud how Sarawak has begun to focus on doing its roles in maintaining the earth’s ecosystem and continue to make sustainable choices.

“We will work in synergy to progress Sarawak’s Energy Transition and to pursue our Green Energy Agenda for a more sustainable energy future,” he said.
