KUCHING: Not everyone will exercise their discretion during Hari Raya and Gawai Dayak celebrations for the common good, said Rise of Sarawak Efforts (ROSE) chairperson Ann Teo.

She was referring to the state government’s decision in allocating a day each for Hari Raya and Gawai Dayak celebration amidst Covid-19 situation. Visiting is allowed but limited to 20 persons at a time per household.

Teo pointed out that there would be some irresponsible individuals who would flout the directives by the government.

“The state government is sanctioning a family gathering on the first day of respective celebration even though one of the ways to break the chain of Covid-19 transmission is to ban gatherings.

“How a family is going to limit it to 20 persons is left to the individual and family, but it suffices to say not everyone exercise their discretion for the common good,” she told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

“Who will be enforcing the standard operating procedure (SOP) on the festivals?

“The simpler way is to keep it to the original directive issued by the state government which is that we can only spend these celebrations with close family members,” she added.
