SAMARAHAN: The majority of teachers in Sarawak are now Sarawakians but the state still faces teacher shortages for certain subjects.

Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Roland Sagah said that while the state has gone beyond the 90:10 target, the shortage is still an issue that needs to be addressed for the education sector to progress.

“At the moment, the teacher shortage we have is for certain subjects like Pendidikan Islam.

“This will of course involve different groups of teachers, I must say,” he said during a press conference after the handover of rero:micro robot kits at Tun Abdul Razak Teacher Education Institute (IPGKTAR) on Monday (Sept 19).

He added that a meeting on the issue was held with the Education Service Commission on Sept 8.

“We have discussed with them and it is up to them to work it out with Ministry of Education (MoE) to sort out the problem,” he added.

Earlier, the Ministry of Education (MoE) announced that it will continue the 90:10 ratio for teacher placements in their respective birth state including Sarawak and Sabah.

Deputy Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin said the ratio will continue to be used until a new approach by the Cabinet has been decided.
