KUCHING: The abolition of Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Pentaksiran Tingkatan Tiga (PT3) examinations has left students going to school without any target.

Pointing this out, Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) chairman Zulkiflee Sebli claimed that ever since the scrapping of the two national exams, there had been many complaints from both parents and teachers.

“Before the abolishment, students were motivated to study for these main exams.

“When they were abolished, we see that there are actually pros and cons.

“Some had supported the decision while others were disappointed as there is no yardstick for their children’s academic progress,” he told New Sarawak Tribune on yesterday (Jan 6).

Nevertheless, Zulkiflee said following the abolishment, the then Education Minister announced that Ujian Akhir Sesi Akademik (UASA) questions would be prepared and coordinated by the Ministry of Education (MoE).

“We are not sure whether or not a similar concept will also be done under the new Education Minister but we hope that UASA is conducted by focusing on student development and achievements.

“Bottom line – we are confident that the MoE will be able to determine what is best for our children and giving them a world-class education.

“If reviving UPSR and PT3 is the best way to this, then KGBS welcomes the decision,” Zulkiflee added.
