KUCHING: Political parties and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Betong are urged to channel any assistance for the longhouse dwellers in lockdown areas to the divisional disaster management committee (DDMC).
Betong DDMC chairman and Betong Resident Friday Belik said this is to comply with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure the safety of all.
“We would like to clarify that any assistance should be sent to Betong DDMC for distribution.
“This is to ensure that the quarantine SOPs and security of the longhouses, schools and their occupants are not being jeopardised. This measure is also to protect members all parties and NGOs from being exposed to the occupants.
“Betong DDMC shall ensure that all assistance will be distributed accordingly by the Betong Community Welfare Department,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Mar 7).
Last Tuesday (Mar 2), Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman and Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas revealed that there are nine longhouses in Betong that are under lockdown.
He said the village safety and development committees are roped in to help enforce the lockdowns at these longhouses.
“We want them to ensure that all inhabitants stay in their own bilek (unit) in the longhouse during the period. We want them to continue to observe the SOPs,” he said.
On Sunday (Mar 7), SDMC reported that there are nine new Covid-19 cases in Betong with eight cases linked to the Jalan Muhibbah Cluster. The other case was an individual who was screened through active contact tracing.
