KUCHING: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chief Chong Chieng Jen’s criticism on the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway and 7th Mile flyover causing traffic congestion at 7th Mile Bazaar is misleading.

Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) chairman Lo Khere Chiang said this in response to a press statement by Chong recently.

Earlier, Chong said that the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway and 7th Mile flyover has caused inconvenience to the people staying in the area.

In response, Lo has confirmed with the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak that the feeder road next to Ee Ann City Commercial Centre will be widened into a two-lane carriageway, which will benefit the community there in the near future.

“Unfortunately, Chong acted on his own without checking with JKR first, and concluded that JKR had not made any provisions to ease traffic flow for the convenience of the public.

“Work improvements in this area are still ongoing,” Lo said in a press statement on Monday (Oct 26).

Lo also pointed out that Chong should put effort in helping the people in his constituency instead of resorting to useless politicking.

He said with the completion of the flyovers at the Sixth- and Seventh-Mile junctions, road users will be able to use these flyovers without stopping at traffic lights.

“We want the community to understand that the current traffic congestion is temporary and to bear with it for the time being.

“Once these junctions and flyovers have been completed, congestion in the area will be greatly reduced,” Lo added.
