MARUDI: The Iban community, especially the youth, need to defend the customs and culture passed down to them by their ancestors.

Marudi assemblyman Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil said this is to ensure their heritage is not lost to time or influenced by foreign cultures.

“Nowadays, the youth are easily influenced by external elements that are not good. That is why I urge the youth to always involve themselves every Gawai festival.

“We need to defend our customs and culture in the Gawai celebration so that it is not forgotten but continued by the younger generation,” he said in a press conference at a longhouse in Sungai Entulang, Bakong on Sunday (June 19).

He said the Gawai celebration this year was celebrated in a bigger way due to the relaxation of the COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

It drew about 2,000 residents from the Marudi, Telang Usan and Mulu state constituencies.

“I hope the Community and Tribal Leaders (KMKK) continue to support the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government so that development continues for the people,” he added.
