SIBU: Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng has pledged to set aside allocations from his Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) funds next year for fire hydrant maintenance in his constituency.

He said it was to ensure public safety during fire incidents as well as build public confidence in the fire hydrant system.

“I have already started to arrange my RTP project allocation for next year and one of my focuses is giving allocation and working together with the Sibu fire station.

“The allocation will be given to the Sibu Municipal Council (as an implementing agency) and we will work together with Bomba Sibu as we need to check area by area on fire hydrants and the piping itself,” he said.

He said this to reporters after officiating the ‘Program Pembangunan Komuniti Rakyat Pemeriksaan Kesihatan Pengguna’ today.

Chieng noted that many fire hydrants and piping in the Bukit Assek constituency were not functioning well, especially after fires occurred in the area recently.

“If Bomba Sibu doesn’t have the funding, don’t worry, the funding will be coming from me. I want to build confidence among our people on our fire hydrant and our fire services here,” he said.

Chieng said the project will be carried out in stages.
