SAMARAHAN: The two-day 1st International Conference on Belt and Road (ICBR) 2020 which began yesterday saw an attendance close to 200 participants from about eight countries, including China, Brunei, Singapore, the Philippines, and Thailand.

Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sarawak Rector Professor Datuk Dr Jamil Hamali revealed that the conference had stemmed from a shared awareness of the importance of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in propelling the development of Sarawak.

“We have to acknowledge that in Asia, China’s development is excellent in many aspects.

“China has the capacity to assist other Asian nations to grow with them, and that includes Malaysia,” he said at the opening ceremony of ICBR 2020 at UiTM Samarahan Campus 2 yesterday.

He pointed out that the conference was an avenue for sharing and to create a network between business owners, academics, administrators, policy makers, stakeholders from government institutions, and students from institutions of higher learning.

The conference is themed ‘Towards Educational Cooperation and Regional Development’ and Jamil said that UiTM had been gearing towards this.

“We have had numerous collaborative projects with our China counterparts.

“We look forward to greater education cooperation in the near future in tandem with BRI, which is fully supported by our state government,” he added.

Ten keynote speeches were delivered at ICBR 2020 — six international speakers and four Malaysian speakers.

Jamil said that today, there would also be round-table discussions regarding potential collaborations.

The conference was jointly organised by UiTM Sarawak, ACEC Association, and Beijing Wuzi University. It was officially opened yesterday by Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing, who represented Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
