SIBU: Members of the Association of Sarawak Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCCIS) are urged to work together with the state government to bring Sarawak into a developed state by 2030.

Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian made the call when officiating at the ACCCIS annual general meeting here today.

He said the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 was an initiative by the state government in its effort to create a prosperous, inclusive and environmentally sustainable Sarawak.

Dr Sim speaks to reporters.

“So, once you know that (Sarawak government goal) then your business model on how you do business, and how you participate must be compatible,” he said.

Taking the handphone industry as an example, Dr Sim said that when the technologies emerge, everyone started to sell phones so that they would not be left out, and not only that it also brought a whole new set of new economics.

“Those in the phone business started handphone repair service, selling reload cards, sim cards, and all these new economics,” he said.

The Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government said that the same goes for the hydrogen gas industry.

“We all know that currently Malaysia is quite happy with the current oil and gas prices but the people didn’t realise how expensive is oil and gas.

“Because the oil prices are high so there will be an acceleration of (changing) car from a petrol car to an electric car as well as the hydrogen car and once it happens who will use petrol then?

“Electric car you just have to plug it yourself at home and the electric car only 80 spare parts while the conventional car has about 1500 spare parts.

“So, if you don’t change it (way of doing business) when electric car come there will be a new set of skills needed.

“These are just a few examples.  So, the Chinese chambers need to know what they are doing, they need to upskill, and at the same time, as Sarawak develops as a nation, we want them to come and join us and continue to contribute,” he said.
