KUCHING: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen is disappointed with Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei, who declined to withdraw his resignation from the party.

In a statement issued, he said that all along, the party has treated Wong well and gave him the opportunity to contest for the Padungan seat in the state elections in 2011 and 2016 — a seat considered by many as one of the best winning chance seats held by the party.

“When he asked the party to give him a chance to defend the Padungan seat under the party’s ticket in the coming state election, there was no question about it.

“Wong’s sudden resignation not only disappointed many, both within and outside party, but it also hurt the party deeply as it came at a critical time when the state election is near.

Chong said that for all the trust that the party placed in him, Wong’s action is a strange way of saying ‘thank you’ to the party that has given him many opportunities

“As his previous mentor and state chairman of the party, I could not help but feel betrayed.

“To our supporters and voters in Padungan, I apologise on behalf of the party for having wrongly placed our trust on Wong King Wei to represent the DAP in the area,” he stated.

He assured supporters and voters that despite the setback, the party will move on and continue to fight for the people’s rights and benefits.

Last Sunday (July 26), Wong announced that he was relinquishing all party posts and resigning as a member of DAP with immediate effect.

He also said that he would not seek re-election in the coming state election despite being re-nominated by DAP to defend the Padungan state constituency.
