KUCHING: The Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah building, which currently accommodates Chung Hua Middle School No. 4, is set to be handed back to the Sarawak government.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the school’s board has agreed to return ownership of the aforementioned building.

“I have discussed this with the school board, and they agreed to hand over the Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah building to the government.

“Now we are in the administrative phase of the process. They will have a new school as the current location is unsuitable for the school. We will develop a new school for them,” he said.

He said this when launching the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre here last night (Aug 5).

On the Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah building and its surrounding area, Abang Johari said it would be further preserved as a heritage site.

“The area will also be the centre where we remember those who have contributed to Sarawak’s journey to independence within Malaysia.

“Therefore, I want to thank the school board for their intention to set up a new school and return the building to the government,” he said.

It was reported that the school’s administrative block in Jalan Haji Taha, initially built in 1930, was previously owned by a Malay community leader named Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah.

However, the building was later sold by his grandchild to the Sarawak Chinese Trustee Board.
