SERIAN: Many people turned up to join a Gawai closing ceremony at Kampung Bedega in the Panchor area near here on Saturday organised by the Batang Samarahan Zone of St Theresa’s Parish Pastoral Council (PPC).

The ceremony started with thanksgiving Mass celebrated by Rector Fr Paul Herry and Fr Raj at 6pm in Kampung Bedega old community hall which was followed by a gathering and the closing ceremony at Kampung Bedega new community hall.

At the homily in the Thanksgiving Mass, Fr Paul mentioned that he launched the Parish Gawai 2019 on May 18 at Kampung Paon Rimo in the Balai Ringin area.

He further said that during his childhood he used to help his parents plant padi and enjoyed the Gawai celebration very much after the padi had been harvested. Even though fewer people plant padi nowadays, the Gawai celebration continued to be held with guests irrespective of race or religion.
