Churches, temples receive more RM1.5 mln

BINTANGOR: A church, two temples, and two other organizations here received donations of RM838,400 from the Sarawak government through the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) to upgrade their houses of worship.

Maradona assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing who was present during the handing over of the cheques at Meradong Service Centre recently said the grant is to implement projects that include the construction, renovation, and upgrading of various houses of worship, multipurpose halls, and other facilities for churches and temples in the state.

The Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) reported that Ding advised the parties receiving the grants to monitor the implementation of their projects.

Bintangor Iban Methodist Church received RM100,000 and Pak Kong Thai Temple received RM700,000.

Meanwhile Che Jin Khor Moral Uplifting Society Bintangor, Bintangor Buddhist Association, and Ming Ang Temple each received RM12,800.

And in Sarikei, five churches in Repok also received donations from UNIFOR.

Sarikei MP cum Repok assemblyman Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii was present to hand over the cheques at the Repok Service Centre recently.

“UNIFOR was established to safeguard the interests and welfare of people of other religions in Sarawak,” he said.

Huang said that the donations would enable religious bodies and organizations to carry out activities and build and repair their houses of worship.

He added that every project implemented must follow the schedule and specifications set by the implementing agency.

Ter Ong Methodist Church received funds of RM200,000; BEM Bandar Sarikei Church (RM100,000); Methodist Town Church (RM200,000); Life Baptist Church (RM100,000) and Iban Pasar Sarikei Methodist Church (RM100,000).

In total, the donations for the churches amounted to RM700,000.
