KUCHING: Suitable and quality tree plantations are currently being planned by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) to replace trees that are prone to fall during wind storms in the city.
Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs and DBKU) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said it involved the process of replanting trees that are mature or have come of age.
“We replace the weaker species with stronger ones that have long taproots,” he said.
Dr Abdul Rahman, who is also the Utilities Assistant Minister (Water Supply), said this after a tree fell at Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Abdul Rahman Yakub yesterday during ‘Santuni Alam Sekitar’ programme at Esplanade Kampung Gersik.
Five trees fell in the area due to the strong winds around 4pm.
According to him, DBKU had already established the species and characteristics of the trees to be grown in the future.
“To see which species are better to replace the existing trees, we look for mature trees that don’t shade leaves, or leaves that fall seasonally,” he said.
