City to host 23rd Asian TV awards

KUCHING: The 23rd Asian Television Awards will be held here from January 11 to 13 next year.

The organising committee and jury for the event (the first ever held in Malaysia), recently announced and confirmed that icons as well as the best television stars in Asia would be in attendance.

The ceremony will be hosted by the legendary May Wan (a former MTV Asia reporter), Choy Wan, Adrian Jalaludin, and Mark Zambrano.

The event will also see more than 300 international delegates comprising of well-known filmmakers and TV programme producers, directors, actors, hosts, jury, main sponsors, award nominees and celebrities from competing countries.

Meanwhile, ATV Awards Sdn Bhd had announced the first group of celebrities who would be walking the red carpet. The event will be broadcasted live on January 12.

Topping the list of celebrities are Thai star Maneerat Kam-Uan, Thai actress, singer, and TV model Khemanit Jamikorn and Thai actor Jiravich Pongpaijit, who is well-known for his acting as Hut in 2016 in a comedy-horror film “Ar Ma”.

Famous actor Ananda Everingham, who is known for playing the main character in the horror film “Shutter” in 2004, Taiwanese model, actress and dancer Kelly Liao Jia Yi and actor Taiwanese singer Wang Kung-Ta will also attend the event.

The other celebrities who will be attending are Ase Wang, one of the most successful young models in Thailand; Wallace Ang, full-time Mandarin radio presenter for MediaCorp’s Love 97.2FM; James Kumar, the winner of the Best New Artist Award at Vasantham’s Pradhana Vizha Awards where he was also nominated in the The Most Popular Male Artist for his role in Vettai 2.0 in 2012; and Derek Chun, an international model, host and actor.

Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Hamzah said, “In preparation for the Visit Sarawak Year 2019, we are very honoured to host the award show which will see many stars and internationally renowned talents coming to Sarawak for the first time.

“It is similar to organising world-class mega events such as Formula One, MotoGP, SEA Games, and others. It will definitely boost the tourism industry in Malaysia and the number of foreign tourists visiting Sarawak.”
