BETONG: Betong’s development and progress after its elevation to a Division on March 26, 2002, is due to the invaluable contributions of civil servants from all state and federal departments and agencies.

“The state government deeply appreciated your co-operation, commitment, professionalism and integrity,” Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah said when officiating at the Betong Division annual Civil Service Day dinner here on Friday.

Layar assemblyman Gerald Rentap Jabu, a political secretary to the chief minister Dr Richard Rapu, Resident of Betong Division Friday Belik and the organising chairman Dr Johnny Pangkas were among those present. Also present was Uggah’s wife Datin Amar Doreen Mayang.

Uggah however reminded the civil servants that the future would be more challenging.

“The demands will snowball as the population grows and the people’s expectations for better quality services get higher.

“We have put in the necessary infrastructure and amenities.

“We have allocated RM580 million for public projects which include 15 new telecommunication towers. Besides, there is also RM30 million worth of minor projects under the Rural Transformation Programme,” he said.

Uggah added that the state GPS government also wants to focus on increasing the income of the rural populace through the implementation of economic activities like the Bukit Sadok Agropolitan Area which covers the Sri Aman, Betong and Sarikei Divisions.

“This agropolitan programme would integrate modern agriculture with livestock rearing, food processing and manufacturing. Hence, every civil servant must rise to the occasion to meet these new challenges,” he said.

He added that with all these multi-million ringgit developments,  the question of their (civil servants) integrity would become a critical issue.

“Whatever projects we are implementing for the people, they must be done according to the stipulated specifications.

“Avoid any element of corrupt practice where your integrity will be questioned.

“I am glad to say that this (corrupt practice) has not been an issue with civil servants here.

“So far the MACC has yet to call in anyone for investigation and we must keep it this way,” he said.

At the function, Uggah who is Bukit Saban assemblyman also announced a grant of RM30,000 for the function next year and another RM20,000 from Rentap.

Rentap in his speech expressed his concern for drug problem in the division which he said were beginning to make its presence felt.

He also called for concerted efforts from all quarters in fighting the drug problem and lauded the move to declare every Saturday now as a plastic bag free day here.

“This move augurs well for our environment and future generations,” he said.
