MUKAH: Sarawakians are hoping that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg would announce something good when he delivers his winding-up speech at the end of the State Legislative Assembly sitting.

Perhaps a year-end bonus for civil servants may be one of the things.

Giving bonuses to civil servants in appreciation for their contribution to the administration of the state government has been a practice for many years.

Whatever the amount, civil servants must be thankful, including the bonus they received last year.

Giving bonus is the Chief Minister’s prerogative and it all depends on Sarawak’s financial standing within a certain time frame.

Abang Johari would certainly not risk giving bonus if the financial standing of Sarawak is not strong.

On Nov 4, the Chief Minister proposed a sum of RM9.891bil for the State 2020 Budget, compared to RM11.1bil for 2019.

It is another successive surplus budget in the last two years since Abang Johari took over as the sixth Chief Minister, replacing the late Tun Pehin Sri Adenan Satem.
