MIRI: A total 4.2 tonnes of garbage were collected within one hour during a community beach cleaning and plogging programme held at Marina Parkcity beach here.

The programme was collaboration between Pustaka Negeri Sarawak Miri and Miri City Council’s sustainable development goals committee (formerly known as Local Agenda 21 or LA 21).

The event which began at 5pm, involved 250 participants, covering nearly 5km of the beach area.

The programme participants consisted of students, members of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and staff of Pantai Bayu Indah Sdn Bhd.

Angeline Edang, one of the participants.

Angeline Edang, 19, was delighted to be able to join in the programme which she believes could help contribute to the community, cleaning up the trash at the beach.

“I am excited to be able to join the programme and help the community. I want to make this beach a clean beach,” she said.

The area was chosen for the programme as it has become a popular tourists attraction.

Unfortunately, it has become the target for dumping disposable wastes.

According to a spokesperson for the organiser, plastic bottles are the main items of trash collected during the programme.
