SERIAN: About 400 adventure buffs worked up a sweat at the annual Bung Sadung Climbathon Trail Challenge, held at Kampung Bunga here Sunday.
The event attracted both locals abd participants from neighbouring Sabah, Brunei Darussalam and the peninsula.
Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Roland Sagah lauded the enthusiastic response to the challenge which drew 297 participants last year.
“This event holds significance. I hope the Village Security and Development Committee (JKK) of Kampung Bunga will understand how to leverage this event to enhance the local economy,” said Sagah who is also Tarat assemblyman when officiating at the event.
The climbathon, a key event listed in the Sarawak Calendar of Tourism Events 2023, gives adventurers the opportunity to discover the heritage nature trails of Bukar Sadung.
The mountain itself boasts a heritage settlement site believed to hold ancestral significance for the Bukar Bidayuh community, tracing back to the era of the Brookes.
Mount Sadung, situated approximately 50 kilometres away from Kuching city, stands as a cherished ancestral reserve for the Bukar Bidayuhs, spanning across 26 villages surrounding its base.
The Bung Sadung Climbathon Trail Challenge was organised by the Kampung Bunga JKKK in collaboration with the Serian District Council and Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts.
Also present were Puncak Borneo Member of Parliament (MP) Datuk Willie Mongin, Serian Deputy Resident Abdul Khalid Manap, Serian District Council Chairman Lim Hock Meng, Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak Damen Rejek, Assistant Permanent Secretary Mona Octavia Sulai Albans Melling and others.
