KUCHING: Face masks made out of cloth are far inferior in efficacy compared to three-ply face masks and N95 masks, said medical practitioner Dr William Voon.

However, he said that cloth face masks did have beneficial effects in preventing infection and shedding of viruses.

“Of the more commonly used masks, the three-layer mask is best,” he said when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune.

He said these were easy to wear and remove, while also being more comfortable than N95 masks. He said that three-ply masks were also cheaper, pointing out that they needed to be changed again and again.

“There is reasonable filtration of viral particles, but leakage of air from the sides is significant. However, it does protect the user to a certain extent.

“More importantly, it reduces the shedding of viral particles when worn by Covid-19 patients. This is especially beneficial if worn by asymptomatic Covid-19 patients,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Dr Voon said that the best in terms of widely available face masks was the N95 mask.

He said that the N95 mask fitted the face very well with a snug fit allowing little air to leak in from outside. It also covered both the nose and mouth.

He said, as this type of mask was made of firm material, it supported an air space inside and allowed easier breathing.

“The only problem is that the rubber band holding it up is tight. It is more difficult to wear and remove. It is also quite uncomfortable if worn for long duration,” he said.
