KUCHING: Covid-19 in Sarawak can be stopped from spreading and contained, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said although the number of cases continued to rise both in the state and nationwide, it would eventually decline if the public obeyed the movement control order (MCO).

“The virus has a 14-day incubation period, so if people stay away from one another within that time, the virus would not find new hosts and would die,” he said in a televised interview on RTM on Sunday night.

“Most of these cases were imported and the virus spreads rapidly by infecting humans through physical contact and close proximity.

“I fully agree that we need to impose a restriction people’s movements to both slow down the spread of the disease transmission and isolate the people who already contracted the virus.”

On the MCO in Sarawak, he said although compliance on the first day was not satisfactory, the days after that had better results.

“The people are compliant and I thank them for their positive response. About 95 per cent adhered to the order according to police figures.

“Stricter measures have been enforced in some areas to prevent people from gathering in big numbers,” he said.

Abang Johari said the state government had taken proactive measures to secure the borders even before the MCO took effect.
“Yes, there are people who are not happy and wrote letters to me (when we employed stringent measures at the borders), but the state government had to take precautionary measures to take care of our entry points,” he said.

The chief minister added that sanitisation or sterilisation will be carried at “hotspots” in the city by the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) working together with the Health Department.

“This is because the virus can spread easily in areas with dense population. By disinfecting these places, we can prevent the virus from spreading further out,” he said.
