MIRI: Greed for power is not only a sin but it also has harmful social consequences, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Addressing some 2,000 participants of a ‘Majlis Amanat Perdana Integriti 2020’ (MAPI 2020) in Miri yesterday, Abang Johari opined that such act was fuelled by a desire for wealth and power that restrained the perpetrators from performing their rightful duties.

This, he said, not only applied to politicians but people in government agencies and private sector.

“If you have good intention and is sincere in your duty, God will help you, unlike some people who frantically (kelam kabut) want to become the eighth Prime Minister,” Abang Johari pointed out.

He said the current chaotic political situation in the country was an outcome of greed for power by certain politicians.

“Because of such situation, the rakyat are also ‘kelam kabut’,” he said.

Hence, he said, integrity was a very crucial leadership trait.

Abang Johari also reminded civil servants in Sarawak to live within their means to avoid the temptation of corruption.

“Greed is always there, ….for example Islam allows polygamy, whereby you can marry up to four different women, but there is an opportunity cost to it…not easy to feed four mouths,….and this would lead you to live beyond your means,” he said.

Also present at the event were State Secretary Datuk Amar Jaul Samion, Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talib Zulpilip, State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasser and other Cabinet ministers.
