SIBU: The unique Teochew Association Sibu Chinese New Year open house that was filled with Chinese cultural activities here yesterday (Feb 11) captivated Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek.

He said that unlike typical open houses centred around food, the event stood out for its diverse range of activities showcasing Chinese culture.

Among the activities organised were exhibitions featuring Chinese calligraphy, cultural elements, traditional games and quizzes.

Chieng speaks to reporters.

“In contrast to the usual focus on dining, the open house was made enjoyable by its variety of activities,” he said when met by reporters after attending the programme at the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu branch headquarters.

Chieng also highlighted the inclusive nature of the event, noting the presence of people from diverse ethnic backgrounds such as Malays and Ibans.

He also emphasised the open house’s role as a platform for the Chinese community to share their culture and heritage with others.
