MALUDAM: Coastal erosion at Tanjung Riong Beach and Kampung Semarang will be given serious attention by the government.

Batang Lupar MP Mohamad Shafizan Kepli has in this context pledged to monitor the planning of erosion control projects so that they can be implemented immediately.

“I am grateful to Lingga assemblywoman Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor for using part of the allocation (RM40 million) under the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA) to build coastal erosion barriers in the Tanjung Riong Beach area.

“A very big commitment from the Sarawak government,” he said, adding that he intended to monitor the undertaking.

He had previously accompanied a Sarawak Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) delegation led by Ahmad Denney Ahmad Fauzi to see for himself the erosion situation.

He said as much as RM18 million has been requested under the 12th Malaysia Plan.

“We hope it will be approved to solve the coastal erosion situation,” said, adding, “I sincerely hope this effort will benefit all the residents of Kampung Maludam.”

Shafizan stressed that the serious attention was also being given to Kampung Semarang.

“This is because the erosion that is happening in Kampung Semarang is getting critical.

“At the end of January, both Beting Maro assemblyman Razaili Gapor and I discussed the issue with the department.

“And what they promised, a 300-meter-long RM6.5 million breakwater project that has been awarded to a contractor can probably start as early as March or April,” he added.
