KUCHING: A coffee shop owner was made RM200 poorer after he received a fake RM100 note on two separate occasions this month.

Special Assistant to Kuching Member of Parliament, Dr Kevin Yii said the coffee shop owner, known only as Lee, received the fake notes on 6 March and last Tuesday.

He said Lee only discovered the notes were fakes ones after he was informed by a bank officer while making a loan payment at a local bank.

Yii said a police report on the incidents was lodged.

“We have also received complaints about the public receiving fake notes in King’s Centre and MJC area.

“The circulation of such fakes notes is a serious offence and can be investigated under Section 489D of the Penal Code for making or possessing instruments or materials for forging or counterfeiting currency notes or bank notes, which provides for a jail sentence of up to 20 years and a fine.

“I urge the police and Bank Negara to carry out a thorough investigation on the matter and stop any circulation of counterfeit notes in the city,” he said.

Yii also urged the public, especially business owners, to check the notes they receive carefully before accepting them.
