KUCHING: Belon Angkasa, the first Malaysian sitcom to use a “space station” as the background of the story is the first production to use the new studio facility of FINAS Sarawak for film activities.

According to a press release from TV Sarawak (TVS), the Sarawak-Malay language sitcom tells the story of a group of Sarawak astronauts stranded on a space station that has been abandoned for decades. They must find a way to return home to Earth. However they face various problems.

Belon Angkasa was inspired by one of the announcements made by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg who said that Sarawak should master and obtain knowledge and expertise related to astronomy because this branch of knowledge is closely related to information and communication technology that can provide great economic benefits to Sarawak in the future.

Earlier this month, former Malaysian National Astronaut Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Mustapha was quoted saying that Sarawak has the potential to produce the next generation of Malaysian astronauts because Sarawakian students have a good command of English and the ability to think innovatively.

Belon Angkasa is produced by Asa Esa Films and led by Alwyn Tay and Rashid Salleh, who respectively serve as Executive Producer and Director for the sitcom.

This series stars the well-known local comedy duo, Ken Michael and Stonton James (Bunyau and Mujap), Bidayuh model and actress Samarinna Tolhip, Rashid Salleh as well as new, local talents from Sarawak.

Belon Angkasa will be distributed by Sarawak Media Group (SMG) through TVS on channel 122 Astro and myFreeview.
