MIRI:  Students from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kampung Bakam now have access to an extended range of books and education materials, thanks to a refurbished library.

The project was made available by Deleum Berhad as part of the group’s continuous efforts to give back to the communities in which it operates.

Deleum Berhad is a provider of diverse range of supporting specialised products and services to the oil and gas industry.

According to Deleum’s group managing director Nan Yusri Nan Rahimy, SK Kampung Bakam was adopted by the group in 2014 under the Pintar Programme.

The Pintar Programme is spearheaded by Pintar Foundation with a vision to inspire students of underperforming schools nationwide to become responsible citizens through the three key tenets of Promoting Intelligence, Nurturing Talent, and Advocating Responsibility (acronym of Pintar).

The not-for-profit organisation also strives to improve both academic and non-academic results for these students through various programmes and activities via its National Programmes, in addition to those conducted by Deleum within the three-year period of its school adoption programme at the school.

The refurbished library named “Pusat Gedung Ilmu Deleum-SK Bakam” houses an array of educational materials all aimed at piping the curiosity and firing the imagination of the students.

The refurbishment project is supported by student volunteers of Curtin University, Malaysia, in collaboration with Deleum to transform the library into a 21st century learning facility.

Deleum’s group managing director Nan Yusri Nan Rahimy said, “In spite of the advent of technology and the internet, a brick-and-mortar library still plays a key role in the daily lives of students.”

“We hope that the refurbished library will serve as a springboard to motivate the students to explore deeper and further their innate creativity and innovative streak even as they strive to integrate in today’s fast-changing world.”

The handing-over ceremony was held in conjunction with the launching of Miri-level Reading. Also present were Miri deputy education officer Alias Ngah, SK Kampung Bakam headmaster Awang Rapbil Awang Sulaiman and Curtin University, Malaysia deputy pro vice chancellor Prof Beena Giridharan.
