MIRI: The public are complaining about fallen leaves from a big rain tree at the back lane of Taman Yakin Commercial Centre.
Peter Hee of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) has also alleged that the area had not been swept since Dec last year. That was why the parking bays at the back lane were littered with dead leaves and rubbish, he said.
This prompted Miri City mayor Adam Yii to visit the area on Feb 19. After that, he instructed the council’s Public Cleansing and Maintenance Department to ensure the parking bays are clean.
Today, Yii clarified that the department would also liaise with the Landscaping Section on how best to address the issue of falling leaves from the big rain tree.
He also clarified that workers from the council’s contractor had been sweeping the area regularly around this commercial centre regularly including clearing the falling leaves at the parking bays.
The mayor added that the daily log sheets showed that the area had been swept and cleaned from Jan until Feb 19.
According to Yii in a statement, the issue was first brought to attention of the Council by a general public through Talikhidmat on Feb 18.
He pointed out that the leaves fell mainly from one big rain tree at the back lane. The workers, he said, could only sweep the area properly when the parking bays are empty.
“The sweeping is being carried out daily in two shifts — from 6.30am to 9am and from 3pm to 6pm.
“From the pictures shown, the falling leaves that have been swept are yellowish in colour. This indicates that they have just dropped from the old tree. If the area has not been swept for a long time, the leaves would have been dark brown,” explained Yii.
