KUCHING: Comply with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for wakes and funerals and do not take the Covid-19 pandemic for granted.

The limit on attendees at such gatherings is to prevent the risk of transmission, said Mambong assemblyman Datuk Dr Jerip Susil today.

“Everyone must strictly abide by the SOPs set by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

“For wakes and funerals, the number of attendants must be kept at 30 at any point in time while for burials, it should not be more than 10 people, depending on the size of the houses.

“Also, the people in attendance must be confined to those from the same households and close family members,” he said during a visit to Kampung Emperoh Jambu today.

The village was placed under the enhanced movement control order (EMCO), effective 12.30am today until March 8, following the detection of 42 Covid-19 positive cases by SDMC on Monday.

SDMC discovered the transmission of the positive cases occurred during a funeral service at the village between Feb 3 and 5.

Dr Jerip appealed to those who had attended the funeral to give their full cooperation by coming forward to undergo swab tests at the nearest clinic.

He also advised outsiders to refrain from visiting the village throughout the EMCO period.

Dr Jerip added that children below 12 years old and the elderly should avoid attending any social gatherings including wakes and funerals.
