Pet owners should apply for licence and confine their pets in the house compound as efforts to prevent rabies.

MUKAH: Tellian assemblyman Yussibnosh Balo has called on residents in this division to apply for a licence and confine their pets in the house compound as efforts to prevent the spread of rabies.

He also said such measure can help avoid or reduce the possibility of fierce pets from biting people.

Dalat and Mukah District Council (MDDM) through its staff, Nazir advised the public to seek advice from their office at 084-871622 for inquiries about the application process and the licence for their pets.

“Pet dogs or cats should not be left roaming around freely because it could expose them to rabies infection.

“Rabies should not be taken lightly. We do not want to have stray dogs biting others. Please keep your dogs and cats in your respective homes,” he told Suara Sarawak recently.

Mukah and Balingian areas have previously recorded rabies cases.

Therefore, Yussibnosh advised Mukah residents not to approach wild animals, especially dogs and cats, for fear of carrying the infection.

“If you are bitten or scratched, immediate action should be taken by going to a nearby clinic or hospital,” he added.

Dog owners are also advised to get their pet dogs vaccinated to prevent rabies infection, adding that the state Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) provides free injections to pet dogs around Mukah.

The rabies epidemic is still spreading in Sarawak despite some drastic measures taken by the state government since it first emerged in 2017.
