KUCHING: Sarawak leaders have heaped praise on national diving queen Pandelela Rinong after she won Malaysia’s first gold medal in the women’s 10m platform final at the 2021 FINA Diving World Cup in Japan on Wednesday.
Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said Pandelela’s achievement was a source of pride for Sarawak.
“Congratulations to our Anak Sarawak for winning the diving World Cup gold in Tokyo – the first Malaysian to win gold at the championships. Sarawak is proud of you,” he said in a social media post on today.
Senior Minister (Infrastructure Cluster) Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof was equally delighted.
“Congratulations to Pandelela Rinong for winning the gold medal at the 2021 FINA Diving World Cup in Tokyo today.”
Federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri also joined the praise.
“Congratulations to Sarawak-born national diver Pandelela Rinong for winning the gold medal in the final dive which gave her 355.70 points in the 10m individual platform event at the 2021 FINA World Cup Diving Championships in Japan.
“It’s the first gold medal for the Malaysian squad and the diver at the World Cup, the last tournament for athletes to hunt for a place in the Tokyo Olympics.”
Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii also praised the achievement by the diver, writing in his Facebook: “Sarawak pride. Congratulations Pandelela. You have made us all proud.”
Senator Jaziri Alkaf A. Suffian also issued a congratulatory message in a Facebook post.
